Coxswain Handbook

For those new to rowing, a coxswain—often called a “cox”—is the person who leads and directs the boat. While rowers provide the power, the coxswain is responsible for safety, steering, communication, and helping the crew work together effectively. The coxswain guides the shell on and off the water, relays instructions from the coach, makes clear race and practice calls, and helps keep the crew calm, focused, and moving as one unit.

CoxswainHandbook (PDF)

This handbook gives coxswains a strong foundation in the essentials of the role, including leadership, boat and equipment awareness, common commands, launching and recovery procedures, steering technique, boat terminology, drills, and race-day preparation. It also covers how coxswains help manage traffic patterns, respond to hazards, use the cox box, and prepare for different types of race starts so they can support both the safety and performance of the crew.
