Participation Requirements
Open to Stone Bridge High School students only.
Swimming Skills: All athletes must demonstrate basic swimming abilities before participating in on-water practices. A swim test will be held before water practices begin.
Physical Exam: A current VHSL physical form (dated after May 1, 2022) is required for participation. Forms can be found at VHSL.org or via the SBHS Athletic Registration site.
Commitment: Athletes are expected to commit fully to the team, attending all practices and races unless prior approval is obtained from the head coach. Vacations during the season are discouraged.
Winter Conditioning
Schedule: Held on select days from 4:45-7:00 PM at Trailside Middle School cafeteria, starting after Thanksgiving and concluding with tryouts in February.
Focus: Practices are led by coaches and include erg (rowing machine) workouts and circuit training, designed to prepare athletes for the spring season.
Attendance: While not mandatory, it is strongly encouraged. Athletes who consistently attend Winter Conditioning are typically better prepared for spring races and may be more likely to earn spots in the most competitive lineups.
Rowing Location
Spring Practices: Conducted at the NEW Reservoir Park on the Beaver Dam Reservoir (22211 Water Vista Drive, Ashburn, VA)
Parking/Drop-off: Athlete parking is located in the park lot. Athletes will walk approximately 5 minutes from the parking area to the boat house location.
Spring Season Schedule
Tryouts: Tryouts will begin Monday, February 23rd, using ergometers (rowing machines) to evaluate athletes. Tryouts will help determine boat placement and, if necessary, the team roster, based on available equipment and safety ratios.
Spring Practices: Daily weekday practices, with regattas and additional practices on Saturdays from March through May.
Championship Season: Athletes may have the opportunity to compete in state championships in May/June and potentially in national-level events.
Required Forms
All athletes must complete all required forms online before participation. Forms include the VHSL Physical Examination Form, which must be turned in to the SBHS Athletic Director by February 14, 2025.
Incomplete forms will result in disqualification from participation in tryouts and practices.
